Banjul, Gambia, October 31 (Infosplusgabon) - Dr. Kumi Naidoo, founder and chair of Africans Rising, has said that integration is the only fundamental idea that will lift Africa from abject poverty.

The South African activist said the richest continent in the planet has to push for maximum social, economic, cultural and political integration for that to be attained.

“If any president of a single African country thinks that they can actually deliver economic justice, social justice, environmental justice, and so on to the people by thinking only within the boundaries of the nation and states that was left by European colonialism, then they are kidding themselves,” Dr. Naidoo said during a public lecture with Africans Rising on the theme: Africans Rising Dream in New Gambia," on Tuesday at Faculty of Law Auditorium, Kanifing.

He added that Africa has been impoverished by successive failures of its leaders in the post-colonial period which sadly The Gambia have a very good example in the previous regime.

However, he said individual countries in Africa must be realistic and address the problem of gender equality, climate impact, the problem of poverty and the income inequality.

He said one of the challenges the continent faces today are changing the narrative of what’s happening in Africa.

He urged young people to take up leadership role to change the narrative that Africa needs which encompasses unity, peace, justice and dignity.

Speaking further, Dr. Naidoo said despite environmental degradation caused by Europeans in Africa, the continent still has one of the most arable lands which can boost agricultural production.

“I have to say Gambia has been blessed with some of the best possibility and diversity for agriculture and for food production if we include what we take out from the ocean,” he said.

Mrs. Kumba Touray, the ambassador of Africans Rising, said it’s time for Africans to rise, work together and work to leave a legacy of peace, justice, and dignity.
