Ghanaian wins West Africa Media Excellence Award


Accra, Ghana, October 29 (Infosplusgabon) -  Ghana's Seth Kwame Boateng, a journalist from Multimedia Broadcasting Limited, won the Western Africa Media Excellence Award on Saturday night in Accra.


His documentary, which won him the prize, denounces the conditions of detention in prisons in Ghana, especially the issue of preventive detention which often exceeds the time of incarceration itself without trial.


Seth Kwame Boateng, who earned US$ 2,000 and a trophy, was delighted by the award, which he said reinforced his belief that he could help improve prison conditions in Ghana.


In addition to the Award of Excellence, he also won the one entered in the category "Human Rights", including a trophy and a sum of US$ 500.


The prize awarded to the report in the category "Gas and Oil" went to the Nigerian Femi Asu of the Punch newspaper (Trophy and an amount of US$ 500).


Togolese Fousseni Saïbou of Togo's Kanal FM radio won the "Health" category prize and won a trophy and US$ 500.


In the category "Investigation", it is the Ghanaian Manasseh Azure Awuni of Multi Media Group Limited, who distinguished himself, winning the trophy and US$ 1,000.


The ECOWAS Award and Regional Integration was picked up by Sheila Williams of Ghana's Business Day. She got US$ 500 and a trophy.


In the category "Reportage on anti-corruption", the Nigerian Alagbe Jesusegun received a trophy and US$ 500.


As a prelude to the awards ceremony, participants from 13 West African countries organized panels to discuss the press in the sub-region whose general theme is how to impact lives through excellence in the media.


The conference was graced by the Gambian Minister of Information and Communication Infrastructures, Demba Ali Jawo, alongside his counterpart from Ghana, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.


The West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards (Wameca) aims to promote the press in the sub-region by organizing prizes to reward the best productions in the media.


It is organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), which has been involved for 20 years in the defence, promotion, protection of freedom of the press and human rights as well as than the development of the media in West Africa.
