Cape Town, South Africa, September 15 (Infosplusgabon) – The United States on Monday claimed that Iran is considering assassinating its ambassador to South Africa as revenge for the American killing of top General Qassem Soleimani last January.

US intelligence officials said they have been aware of the threats against Lana Marks since June, but believed the threat had become more "specific" in recent weeks.

Marks who was nominated by President Donald Trump in 2018 is based in Cape Town.

The State Department, CIA, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence have all declined to comment on the matter but the Iranian embassy in Pretoria is expected to release a statement.

Soleimani, who led Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, was killed by a US drone strike in Baghdad, Iraq, on 3 January, 2020.

Marks was born in East London, South Africa, and served as the Chief Executive Officer and designer of Lana Marks, a fashion accessories brand that specialises in exotic leathers and is known for creating some of the world's most expensive handbags.

The Lana Marks company has stores in Palm Beach, New York, Beverly Hills, and Dubai.
