Port Louis, Mauritius, September 15 (Infosplusgabon) - A total of 8,762 Mauritians who were stranded in different countries following the global coronavirus outbreak have been repatriated to date, according to the spokesperson of the Mauritius National Communication Committee on Covid-19, Zouberr Joomaye.

Five more flights are expected from Kenya, London, Reunion Island, Dubai and Madagascar to bring home more Mauritians up to 24 September 2020.

Dr Joomaye said that with the reopening of the island’s borders on October 1, priority will be given to Mauritians and residents with occupational permits as well as other visitors wishing to travel to Mauritius.

“However, they will have to stay in quarantine for 14 days,” he added.

Regarding sanitary precautions, he said that a Covid-19 lab has been set up at the airport which will be manned by qualified personnel in order to conduct the required tests on travelling passengers.

“The personnel of hotels are being trained on preventive measures”, he underlined.

However, Dr Joomaye deplored that many people were not observing the sanitary measures like wearing a mask in public and not to shake hands.

According to him, “with the reopening of the borders on 1 October, it will be mandatory for the population to practice social distancing, wear masks in public, put in place by the Ministry of Health and Wellness in order to protect the population from the coronavirus.”

Dr Joomaye also indicated that Mauritius has signed an agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to benefit from the first vaccines that will be approved.

For its part, the Health ministry said in a communiqué that the number of PCR tests conducted over 24 hours have gradually increased from 200 to 1,400.

It said that the number of positive cases registered so far stand at 361 of which 337 patients have been successfully treated.

There are currently 14 imported active cases and 2,057 travellers are in quarantine.
