Guinean parliamentary elections scheduled for late this year

Conakry, Guinea, September 17 (Infosplusgabon) – Guinea's parliamentary elections will be held on 28 December, Mr Salifou Kébé, chairman of the national independent electoral commission (CENI), said at the end of an audience with Prime Minister, Dr Ibrahima Kassory Fofana.

Shortly after they talked behind closed doors last week, the CENI president told the press that he would soon communicate to the head of government the date for the elections.

He said ''28 September is the date we set during our plenary session. It is possible," adding that the Prime Minister took note of the announcement and promised to take the necessary measures.

However, 7 of the 17 CENI Commissioners have issued a declaration  challenging the date chosen to hold the poll.

The Commissioners said in a meeting with CENI in May in Kindia, 135 km from the capital, that a thorough planning be made with all concerned actors.

‘’A deadline of 235 days had been set to hold the parliamentary elections from the lifting of all administrative, financial and technical obstacles. And it was only on Monday that the government finally engaged to lift those constraints," said the declaration made by the seven commissioners.

Wanting to hold the parliamentary elections by late this year, or less than 100 days, according to them, is to have the wish to disrupt the electoral process and also not respect certain recommendations, particularly the auditing of the electoral process.

"(...) With our oath as Commissioner and the independent nature of our institution, we cannot accept any form of violation of the law, any illegal limitation of the voters’ rights for registration," they warned.

Sources say that the opposition is represented at CENI by seven commissioners, the presidential majority by the same number. The government has one representative, and the civil society has two representatives.
