East African soldiers to undertake joint multi-national military exercises in Uganda

Kigali, Rwanda, January 30 (Infosplusgabon) - A one-week multi-national military exercise involving Armed Forces from the East African Community (EAC) will be held in Uganda from 31 January to 7 February, a statement said in Kigali on Tuesday.


Some 22 officers from Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) led by Col James Ruzibiza is set to leave Kigali on Tuesday for Kampala, Uganda, to participate in the East African Community (EAC) Armed Forces Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC), according to the statement.


It said that contingents from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda will engage during the whole week in medical outreach services and light engineering works in Bukedi Sub Region, Eastern Uganda.


The aim of the EAC Armed Forces CIMIC Week is to foster cooperation between the EAC Defence Forces and civilians. Its activities will culminate in the celebration of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Day.


The day known as "Tarehe Sita" (Ugandan Liberation Day of 6 February 1986) was decided at the EAC Sectoral Council on Cooperation in Defence meeting held in November 2017 in Kampala, the statement added.


The exercise is in line with Article 125 of the EAC treaty which provides for partner states to cooperate in defence affairs and the memorandum of understanding framework on defence, which provides that "we shall carry out military trainings and operations together".
