Bamako, Mali, March 15 (Infosplusgabon) - The Malian government says it is closely following the case of renowned musician Rokia Traore, who has been held at the French prison of Fleury-Mérogis since Thursday, following a dispute with her former partner, Belgian Jans Goosens, in a child custody dispute.

In a statement sent on Saturday, the Malian government gave the assurance that the musician, who holds a Malian diplomatic passport, has been receiving assistance from the Malian authorities for several months.

The government reassures the public that consular and diplomatic services have been mobilised for a successful outcome of the issue and thanked all those who have shown goodwill to the artiste.

Traoré was arrested last Thursday at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport during a stopover in Paris on her way to Brussels to attend a hearing at the Brussels Court of Appeal, following a dispute between the singer and her former companion over custody of their daughter.

An international arrest warrant for Traoré was issued at the end of 2019 by the Belgian court for "kidnapping, illegal confinement and hostage-taking".

The facts state that after their separation, the Court of First Instance of Brussels gave sole custody of the child to her father.

One of Traoré's lawyers, Mr Yéyia Touré, said she appealed the court's decision because a complaint has been filed against him for sexually touching of the child.

She is waiting for the investigation chamber of the Paris court to decide on her possible extradition to Belgium on Wednesday.
