Kenyan President retains six ministers in new Cabinet

Nairobi, Kenya, January 7 (Infosplusgabon) - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta retained six out of his 19 Cabinet Secretaries and overhauled the top Command of the Police.

 

Announcing the new line-up of ministers in a televised address, President Kenyatta said that the team would implement his new social and economic plan to transform Kenya.

 

He appeared to have targeted the justice system, with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Keriako Tobiko, named to the Cabinet, although not immediately assigned a role.

 

President Kenyatta said Tobiko had resigned from his duty as the DPP.

 

The President also named the commander of his key security and escort unit, Edward Njoroge Mbugua, the new head of Police and Deputy Inspector-General of Police.

 

He moved Samuel Arachi, the Deputy Inspector General of Administration Police, tasking him with securing key administration installations.

 

Noor Gabao, would become Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the administration Police.

 

Kenyatta named Police Spokesperson George Kinoti, the new head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to replace Ndegwa Muhoro, who has been heading the department.

 

Under Muhoro, the Police was accused of forced disappearances and the assassination of top Muslim clerics in the name of fighting terrorism.

 

Kenyatta retained six ministers in the new cabinet but did not comment on the fate of 13 others. The President can appoint a maximum of 22 Cabinet Ministers.

 

The ministers retained in the Cabinet include Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich, Charles Keter (Energy), Najib Balala (Tourism), Education and Interior ministries Fred Matiangi and Joseph Mucheru, Information and Communication James Macharia.
