Kigali, Rwanda, October 17 (Infosplusgabon) -  Implementation of free movement of persons in Africa is one of the flagship projects of Agenda 2063 of the African Union (AU) but some countries are unwilling to embark on this initiative due to internal security concerns, a senior official of the continental organisation remarked here on Tuesday.

Matlosa Khabele, Director for Political Affairs at the Africa Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was addressing the opening session of a two-day AU meeting of heads of immigration departments and border protection police from 51 African countries.

This a technical preparatory meeting ahead of the ministerial session that will affirm the commitment of African governments to push forward their  agenda on free movement of persons, goods and services among AU member countries.

African ministers for Internal Security and Justice are due to gather in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, from 20-21 October.

The ministerial conference will discuss the challenges facing AU member states in turning Africa into a "continent with seamless borders."

It is organised under the theme 'Opportunities for Migration and Free Movement of Persons in Africa and Mitigating Challenges'. So far only 15 African countries, including Benin, Rwanda, Mauritius, Seychelles, Ghana and Nigeria have eased or scrapped visa requirements.
