Coronavirus: Rwandan govt imposes lockdown in several areas of Kigali city after cases rise

Kigali, Rwanda, june 27 (Infosplusgabon) - The Rwandan government Thursday imposed a lockdown on several areas of Kigali city after a surge in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, an official statement reaching Infosplusgabon here said.

 

All employees, both public and private, living in these designated areas shall work from home under stricter measures, the statement said.

 

Rwanda law enforcement officials have already ordered sealing down the suburbs of Kigali city which are mostly made up of informal settlements with lower-income earners.

 

“From tonight, the following villages in the City of Kigali have been put under lockdown for 15 days,” the statement said.

 

The stricter measures were taken in observation of the global trend of COVID-19 virus and consideration of the experiences of other countries, according to the same source.

 

Coronavirus infections in Rwanda have increased by 32 to reach 830, while the number of recoveries climbed to 376 as of Thursday, the health ministry said.

 

Rwanda reported its first coronavirus case on March 15, four days after the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

 

Rwanda still keeps its borders closed to prevent imported cases.
