Three companions of Malian opposition leader Soumaila Cissé released

Bamako, Mali, April 4 (Infosplusgabon) - The Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD), Mali's main opposition party, announced on Saturday that the last three members of MP Soumaïla Cissé's delegation, who were abducted by jihadists, were released on Friday evening.


Thus, only Soumaila Cissé, abducted with his delegation to Niafunké while campaigning for the parliamentary elections of 29 March, remains in the hands of his captors.



Five other members of his delegation were  released on Thursday evening. His bodyguard was killed in the kidnapping.


Soumaila Cissé, who was running for his own succession in the constituency of Niafunké, his stronghold, was re-elected in the first round, according to provisional results announced on Thursday by the Minister of Territorial Administration.


The URD, which says it is following the situation with the necessary attention, has warmly thanked all those who are committed to a happy outcome of this case.


Soumaila Cissé had reached the second round of the presidential election of 2013 and 2018, after which he was defeated by President Ibrahim Boubacar Kéita.
