Coronavirus: Fayez Al-Sarraj says Libya can overcome COVID-19


Tripoli, Libya, March 27 (Infosplusgabon) – The chairman of the presidential council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, has said that the Libyan government is able to overcome the global coronavirus crisis, "thanks to the efforts of the nation and the commitment of citizens to the precaution and prevention measures against the pandemic".


In an address to Libyans, Mr Al-Sarraj said that all sectors of the country are contributing and mobilizing to protect Libyans and other residents from the spread of the new coronavirus, underlining that "the Libyans became anxious after the announcement of the first case of the virus".


He stressed that the people should remain calm as the patient was followed up, his state of health remains stable and reassuring that his relatives and those who were in contact with him have been tested which were negative.


Libya on Tuesday recorded its first case of confirmed COVID-19 infection from a 73-year-old man who returned from Saudi Arabia.


Mr Al-Sarraj added that the precautionary measures is a national duty, adding that "citizens showed a great sense of awareness by responding to the instructions".


He insisted on the fact that the government will not tolerate any negligence to those instructions.


Mr Al-Sarraj underlined that the government has adopted urgent measures to help Libyans stranded abroad in coordination with the Libyan embassies, adding that the legislative, surveillance and economic institutions have taken orientations to resolve all crises resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.


Al-Sarraj said "we are dealing with two issues here - the coronavirus and the militias", alluding to Haftar’s forces taking advantage of the health problems to bombard civilians and attack governmental troops.
