Cotonou, Benin, March 15 (Infosplusgabon) - Benin has mobilised nearly seven billion CFA francs for urgent actions against the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, the Ministry of Health said in Cotonou on Sunday.

In total, "...6.950 billion CFA francs needed to take care of emergency actions as part of the fight against this pandemic" has already been mobilised by the government, the ministry said.  (US$1=CFAF 600.)

This amount is for the construction of infrastructure necessary for the care and treatment of infected persons, acquisition of equipment to strengthen the technical platform and medical consumables and provision of buildings to ensure the isolation of persons suspected persons during the observation period.

In addition to this envelope, 33.665 billion F CFA will be mobilized with the support of technical and financial partners within the framework of strengthening disease surveillance systems and health crisis management.

With this money, the Beninese Government plans, in the medium and long term, to set up care centres and laboratories that meet international standards for more sustainable and efficient management of the response to epidemics and other health crises that may arise.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the Government has taken measures to prevent it from the country and to ensure its proper management, where necessary.

These measures include strengthening health surveillance at all points of entry, including Cotonou airport and port, systematically requiring self-isolation for travellers coming from affected countries or countries at risk, and restricting non-essential travel to those countries.

The Beninese authorities, who are currently organising an information and awareness-raising campaign in communes, schools and universities, have recommended that the population avoid handshakes and hugs.
