Former Tunisian leader Ben Ali dies in Saudi Arabia

Tunis, Tunisia, September 22 (Infosplusgabon) – Former Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali died on Thursday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he found asylum since 2011, his lawyer Mounir Ben Salha  said.

 

Ben Ali was since then living in exile with his wife Leila, his son Mohamed and his daughter Halima.

 

According to his lawyer, his body will be transferred from the holy city of Mecca while waiting for his family to decide on the place where he will be buried.

 

According to Radio Shems, the former president, 83, was admitted to the reanimation service of the hospital for three months. He suffered from prostate cancer.

 

 

According to information from his staff, his state of health deteriorated over the past few weeks, and rumours had circulated on his death, but were every time denied by his lawyer and his daughter Halima who stayed  with him in Jeddah.

 

 

 

The former key man of Tunis, who governed the country with an iron fist fro 23 years, found refuge in Saudi Arabia in 2011, at the beginning of the Tunisian revolution.

 

 

 

Tunisian Prime Minister Youssef Chahed recently remarked that he would see no inconvenience to bury him in his country.
