2018 CAF Champions league: Powerhouses Wydad Casablanca, Mazembe eliminated


Cairo, Egypt, September 22 (Infosplusgabon) - Algerian league champions, ES Setif, and Angolan kings, 1º de Agosto, caused the major upsets of the day on Friday when they dismissed continental powerhouses, Wydad Casablanca and TP Mazembe, respectively, in the quarter-finals of the 2018 CAF Champions league.


In their quarter-final match, 2-time winners ES Setif sacked defending champions, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, with an 1-0 aggregate win.


Setif won the first leg 1-0 and held the Moroccans to a barren draw in the second leg. Both sides are 2-time winners of the cup.


Angolan champions, 1º de Agosto, defeated 5-time winners TP Mazembe of the DR Congo on the away goal rule to reach the semi-finals of the 2018 CAF Champions league.


Hosting the second-leg, quarter-final match, Mazembe couldn't find their rhythm, and drew 1-1 at home after a disappointing 0-0 draw in the first leg in Angola.


Also through to the semi-finals are Espérance de Tunis of Tunisia, with a 3-1 aggregate win against fellow Tunisians, Étoile du Sahel.


The second-leg Tunisian derby ended 2-1 for Esperance which won the first leg 1-0. Both sides are also 2-time winners of the competition.


The fourth quarter-final match will be played on Saturday between Al-Ahly of Egypt and Horoya, of Guinea. The Egyptians, the most successful club in the history of the competition with 8 titles, held Horoya 0-0 in the first leg in Guinea.
