Athletics Kenya cracksdown on sex pests

Nairobi, Kenya, March 14 (Infosplusgabon) - Athletics Kenya (AK) has mounted a crackdown on rogue coaches and officials who sexually abuse junior athletes.

AK President Jackson Tuwei said Tuesday night that the federation is cracking down on the culprits and will bring those implicated to book.

Tuwei warned those who perpetrate the crime to be ready to face the consequences, promising that AK will remain steadfast in fighting the malpractice in which male coaches are alleged to sexually abuse minors.

"We want to assure the government that Athletics Kenya will crackdown on coaches implicated in such acts and subsequently bring them to book," he said.

He was re-acting to an expose carried by a local TV station, in which junior athletes, below the age of 18, claim to have been sexually assaulted by coaches in private training camps in western parts of the country.

This is the second time the station ran the story, titled- 'Running with Hyenas'.

Speaking during a send off dinner for Kenya's team to the Africa Cross Country championships in Algeria, Tuwei said they dealt with the situation in October last year and even took necessary action and measures.

"As it is now, some coaches are under probe and if found guilty of misconduct, we will not only ban them but also revoke their licenses," he asserted.

He said they have told coaches and other officials in no uncertain terms that their responsibility is to protect the junior runners.

The president said AK has been alarmed by a recent expose in the media.

"Whereas we do admit that we had to deal with that situation at some point, we would like to state that the story is now behind us with the unfortunate events having taken place last year," he said.

He said AK has made a number of changes on how athletics camps should operate besides outlawing individual camps run by individuals.

He said the federation has put in place measures that all junior runners train under the ambit of their respective schools with chaperones attached to them.

"Gone are the days when we used to have youth athletes and especially girls being put in private set ups," he said.

Tuwei said they have been monitoring the progress of our athletes in these camps and their teachers and will not hesitate to take action against self seekers whose agenda is different from that of developing athletes.

"We have also intensified the visits to training centres to ensure our athletes are getting the best treatment and at the same time attending their classes," said Tuwei.
