President Zuma denies backing ex-wife as interim South African President

Cape Town, South Africa, January 14 (Infosplusgabon) - President Jacob Zuma on Sunday denied damaging media reports that he would agree to step down early if his former wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma became interim president.

The Office of the Presidency addressed the “incorrect reports” which claimed the former AU Commission chairperson should be appointed as Deputy President of the country.

"No such discussion has taken place and no such demand has been made anywhere by President Zuma," the statement said.

The Mail and Guardian newspaper on Friday reported that this is the demand of President Zuma's supporters, following the election of Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa as president of the majority party, the African National Congress (ANC). Ramaphosa narrowly defeated Dlamini-Zuma in the party’s December elective conference.

President Zuma has been significantly weakened by the poll result and was repeatedly booed at the ruling party’s mass rally in East London on Saturday while Ramaphosa received a hero’s welcome.
